HAGAR: Jewish-Arab Education for Equality is a spring-board for social change through its bilingual, multicultural school and community programming. As parents and community members partner in the educational process, we create a community of Arabs and Jews who learn and work together towards a shared and peaceful future. Founded in 2006, our community of Arabs and Jews has developed the first and only bilingual school in the Negev. Our school (currently nursery through 4th grade and growing each year) is dedicated to academic excellence for each student to reach his or her potential. Class enrollment is balanced between Jewish and Arab children. Two teachers (one Jewish and one Arab) are present in each classroom guaranteeing both the Hebrew and Arabic languages and their respective cultures equal status. Religious diversity is taught using holidays for both celebrations and educational moments. By design, classes are small, the school day is extended, and a nutritional lunch is served. Through our school, we have developed a unique community of Arabs and Jews from all socio-economic backgrounds. From afterschool activities to weekend nature trips, spoken Arabic classes, joint Arab-Jewish holiday celebrations, bilingual shows, and family workshops, a shared society in Israel's Negev is blooming. The demand for activities continues to grow as we develop new programs for parents, including soccer and basketball games.
