The institute of automotive engineering (FTG) at the Graz University of Technology was founded in 2003. The main tasks of FTG are education, research and development in the core competences of automotive engineering. Since 2004, FTG is a member of the "Frank Stronach Institute (FSI)".The institute is structured in the fields of expertise of professors with habilitation and assigned specialist teams. They are organized into three specialized groups: Automotive Mechatronics, Vehicle Dynamics and Lightweight Design.Automotive MechatronicsLife cycle analysis and developing solutions for future mobility including transportation and environmental innovations, design and integration of alternative drivetrains and e-mobility in general as well as virtual product development.Vehicle dynamicsModelling, simulation and experimental testing of vehicle dynamics-relevant systems and components of the entire vehicle using commercial and in-house software packages as well as extensive mobile and stationary measurement technology. Anther focus of this group is ADAS that conduct modelling and simulation of automated driving functions focusing on the entire vehicle using commercial and in-house software packages. Experimental testing with test vehicles on test tracks and public roads as well as an overall vehicle simulator.Lightweight Design Strength and vibration analysis with their diverse interactions in the overall vehicle system. Important factors here are contacts, plastic effects, non-linear coupling points, thermal boundary conditions and friction effects, user-specific service life, installation space and costs. Depending on the task, the project will be accompanied by concept to series production, embedded in the development process of the complete vehicle. Specific know-how exists in the area of chassis, brakes, drive systems, special and off-road vehicles.
