Maji (which means water in Swahili) is a not-for-profit organization that supports refugees initiatives in Uganda. Currently, Maji is the sole financier of IWAS, a refugee-local community initiative that provides clean water for drinking and water for irrigation using a solar-powered water tanks. IWAS will use a stainless steel tank and PVC pipes that are environmentally-friendly and lead-free. The use of solar power will ensure minimal maintenance costs so that refugees can afford to maintain the tank for years. Another component of IWAS that Maji supports is the hands-on agricultural training it will offer to refugees. Through I was, we train refugees to practice crop rotation, which is fruitful for the land and helps reduce crop diseases. We also introduce other environmentally friendly farming practices in the camp.
