Matthew Gillett Gallery

The Matthew Gillett Gallery is a newly established gallery on the Illawarra South Coast.The Gallery was set up with the idea of formulating a new recipe in gallery design and location.The Gallery has received a wonderful response from the public and has proven to be bothsuccessful and popular.Artist and gallery founder Matthew has enjoyed the social experiment that has arisen from hisoriginal gallery concept and this has led to formulation of an Art Prize with the same principles.Matthew's idea is to build on the social developing a developmental art prize that all up coming artistcan engage with.A prize that is fair, democratic, interesting, combined with a very, very high traffic to the ScarboroughHotel that on key weekends can attract upwards of 6000 people .Matthew's Statement - After years traveling the world, painting, surfing and learning, I returned to the south coast of NSW topursue my vision to open and curate my own gallery.The inspiration behind this vision has been to expose the depth of artistic talent that exists in my belovedsouth coast and to really showcase how beautiful this area is with an inspiring location. I wanted to helpthese artists exhibit alongside other artist, local and international, and helpthem further their own artistic ambitions.The art at the Scarborough location occupies two rooms to your right, anddown the stairs on the north side of the heritage building.I have no desire to follow the traditional art gallery's set up. I'd rather youmove around the Scarborough space and discover the art as you go. Thegoal for me as curator is to create a gallery space that you can enjoy, roamfreely in, chat about the art, laugh, sit, ponder and not feel like you have tobehave like you're in the Vatican.Art is to be enjoyed, discussed, loved, hated, stared at and got- ten lost inand to inspire and provoke emotion.I hope The Matthew Gillett Gallery delivers this.
