Milang Marine Search & Rescue Squadron Inc. (MMSARS) is a Public Benevolent Institution and a registered charity with DGR (Deductible Gift Recipient) status with the Australian Tax Office. Our formation was made possible through the receipt of a generous donation made by Freemason's Masonic Charities who share our desire to preserve life. MMSARS ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY: In South Australia, SA Police coordinates marine search and rescue operations and VMR (Volunteer Marine Rescue) Squadrons provide a 24 hour response to marine emergencies and assist police with search and rescue operations. Our brand new rescue boat 'Freemason' is ‘on station' at all times and can be launched within minutes from the Milang base located on the banks of Lake Alexandrina. The primary Charter of MMSARS is the protection, preservation, and saving of human life and to provide an on water safety presence. In most cases, on water safety can be a range of activities such as:• Assisting mariners in non-emergency situations such as breakdowns;• Searching waterways for missing people;• Rescuing people from boats and waterways;• Ferrying people from one location to another in emergency situations;• Helping other emergency services with operations such as transporting emergency service personnel and police. The Foundation Committee of MMSARS is made up of highly qualified Rescue Boat operators, making it one of the most qualified Marine Rescue Squadrons in South Australia. The Committee represents an extensive depth of maritime expertise, two members whom hold their coxswain's tickets and a third who holds a Master IV Skippers ticket. In addition, all have intimate lifetime knowledge of the waters of Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert, the lower river Murray and the Coorong. For further information on the Squadron, to make a donation or to get involved, please email the Commodore, Nick Wotton at commodore@mmsars.org.au
