In the light of the gruesome murder of George Floyd and the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests which ensued, the Read, Understand and Grow Bookclub was born. We created the RUG Bookclub as we felt the need to for an accountability mechanism to ensure that we keep educating ourselves on racism and other social issues. RUG Bookclub is exactly that - a safe community dedicated to continuously reading, discussing and honouring the works of Black and ethnic minorities authors, aiming to help us all become better-informed activists and better allies. The RUG Bookclub meets once a month to discuss a specific book and exchange opinions on relevant social and political issues. In our first meeting we discussed Reni Eddo-Lodge's "Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race", while our second meeting will be centred around James Baldwin's "If Beale Street Could Talk".
