SHARE is a new NHS Research Scotland initiative created to establish a register of people interested in participating in health research and who agree to allow SHARE to use the coded data in their various NHS computer records to check whether they might be suitable for health research studies. This access can be incredibly useful when it comes to developing new treatments and cures for a wide variety of health conditions.The SHARE register also seeks permission to use any leftover blood from routine clinical tests for anonymised genetic research. There is no additional sample of blood needed, it is just the next time your GP or the hospital take a blood sample any leftover blood is anonymised and passed to scientists for research instead of this blood going to waste. Currently around 70,000 leftover blood samples are discarded daily in Scotland. The SHARE initiative is a world first to harness leftover blood in this way.SHARE is a collaboration between Universities and the NHS in Scotland, supported by NHS Research Scotland and funded by the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government.
