While we have been fortunate in our choices, there are certain things which I truly miss from my previous life living in India. Aside from obvious things like sitting on the balcony, sipping chai, and snacking on vegetable fritters with my mother on a nice rainy afternoon, I miss the colors. Soft flowing, loose fitting fabrics. Stores filled to the ceiling with thousands of bolts of fabric, countless patterns, and skilled artisans who could stitch my clothes from scratch and tailor outfits to my every whim. When I decided to start my company, India and our daughter provided my inspiration and hence, Sama Sitara was born. Sama is short for my daughter's name Saumya. Sitara is Sanskrit for morning star.ABOUT OUR CRAFTS, OUR MEN & OUR WOMENAll of our kaftans are designed not from templates but from scratch. Our mission is to scour India for the finest fabrics, rich in color and complexity. Then we use local craftsmen in India, all women seamstresses to stich our kaftans by hand. One piece could take a woman two to three days to assemble. The results speak for themselves- beautifully crafted, individual works of art. Each pattern is limited to ten pieces. When the kaftans are brought to market here in the United States, a large impression is left behind in India. Since no middleman is used in production, individual women gain pride in ownership of the production platform and can help clothe and educate their own children, feed their families, and create your kaftan.MEGHA KHANNA HEITMANNMegha is the force behind this beautiful apparel brand.
