Tutelage is a national police-led programme, working closely with all 45 UK police forces to reduce the impact of untaxed, uninsured, unsafe and untraceable vehicles on our roads. The initiative is led by the NPCC's National Roads Policing Operations, Intelligence and Investigation (NRPOII) and supported by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB). Our initial work been to contact registered keepers of vehicles seen on the road that do not appear to have insurance. Our letters encourage registered keepers to check their vehicle's insurance status (via the MIB website www.askMID.co.uk) and warn them of the consequences of uninsured driving.Since 2020 Operation Tutelage has encouraged over 300,000 motorists across the UK to drive insured. Uninsured driving is associated with an increased likelihood of being involved in a serious road crash, and pushes up the costs of insurance for all drivers. It is illegal to drive a vehicle on a road or in a public place without at least 3rd party insurance. Even if the vehicle itself is insured, if you're not correctly insured to drive it you could be considered to be driving without insurance and could get penalised. You could receive a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points if you are caught driving a vehicle that you are not insured to drive. If the case goes to court, you could get an unlimited fine and be disqualified from driving.
