The Untextbook Project is an initiative to provide access to quality books and promote the idea of reading for pleasure for children between 2-6 years old. Working at this foundational stage will allow the children to build skills to read with understanding and comprehension rather than reading just for mugging up for a lifetime. We focus on low-income communities by involving various stakeholders such as parents, teachers and the school administration. The parents are involved with the help of a WhatsApp chatbot that interacts with the parents giving them access to audio recordings of age-appropriate children's books, songs and poems. The teachers are involved with the help of a discussion-based training module to raise awareness of the importance of reading with comprehension. The school is involved in this process by providing one hour of school time for children to spend in a resource room. This room has a book corner, educational toys, flashcards and a drama corner. With a balance of these stakeholders, we hope to change the way the next generation approaches reading and understanding. The new India will no longer learn just to pass an exam but will learn to grow and understand themselves.
