Founded in 1972, the Imire Conservancy in eastern Zimbabwe is focused on the long term protection of the endangered black rhino. A united approach is the key to the survival of the planet's wildlife and ecosystems. We envisage a future where people in Zimbabwe value, protect and benefit from wildlife, and where communities can live and thrive together. We believe in putting people at the centre of conservation. Our ultimate goal is to protect our endangered species through a unified model of conservation, combining environmental protection, community engagement and responsible tourism. The success of our conservation efforts are dependent on our community, and our over-riding strategy is to empower communities through livelihood opportunities, education, skills training and employment. We have seen considerable success from our outreach programmes, enabling us to build strong relationships with our neighbouring communities over three generations. Imire strives to remain at the forefront of conservation in Zimbabwe, taking part in ground-breaking breeding programmes, wildlife research, innovative game capture and movement and advanced anti-poaching solutions. Our conservation actives are carried out to the highest international standards. We practice a low-impact tourism model. The domestic market is served by Sable Lodge, enabling local people to experience our wildlife, and we also run a small international eco-volunteer programme. These enterprises fund our day-to-day conservancy operations, with surplus revenues combined with donor funds to support our community outreach programmes and to sustain larger conservation initiatives.Since wildlife was introduced to our farmland in the early 1970s, our conservation efforts have resulted in Imire being a key protection area for black and white rhino and home to healthy populations of giraffe, the rare sable antelope, buffalo, blesbok, nyala, eland, kudu and three elephants.
