The Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland Inc ("ILAQ") was founded in 2007. We are a professional representative body designed to advance the profile and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal professionals within the wider legal profession in Queensland and elsewhere.The organisation is run by a management committee and all work is done by those who volunteer their time to take on governance roles and other projects throughout the year.Some of the organisations key objectives are to:- Increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved in legal education, the legal profession and associated legal work.- Implement programs and initiatives to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people participating in the Queensland legal profession.- Raise awareness and understanding of the issues affecting the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Queensland legal profession.- Initiate, develop and collaborate with relevant professional bodies, government agencies and education institutions to support the work of the organisation.The legal profession in Queensland and across Australia can only be enhanced by our increased recognition and participation.Our current membership consists of and is open to members of the judiciary, barristers, solicitors and law students from across Queensland, both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous people.
