The Agroenvironment Research and Development Institute (IRDA)'s mission is to carry out research, development and transfer activities in agroenvironment aimed at promoting innovation in agriculture, with a view to sustainable development. In its 2012-2016 strategic plan, IRDA identified certain priority issues: • Soil health. • Preservation of water resources. • Air quality. • The quality of the crops. • Reducing dependence on fossil fuels. • The maintenance of biodiversity, including soil fauna (e.g. earthworms) • The viability of farms. • Obtaining optimal returns • Cohabitation. • Human health. To help the agricultural sector face these challenges, IRDA has determined six research directions: • Develop practices and crop management that preserve soil quality. • Develop water management strategies and tools. • Develop techniques to reduce emissions into the environment. • Develop practices to combat crop enemies and pathogenic microorganisms. • Propose integrated approaches to the valorization of biomass. • Identify measures to reduce greenhouse gases and adapt to climate change in agriculture.
